The Demise of the Baby Birds

6/2/12: Eggs under the slide.

Artie and Amelia found a surprise under the slide of her swing set – a nest with five eggs in it! Amelia was very good at staying off her slide, even though she really wanted to use it and she loved peeking at the nest. Mother bird would sit in a branch above our heads and chirp at us, so we only peeked every few days.

There were five perfect little speckled eggs and soon there were five hatched chicks. We were all very happy and excited. Sadly, just a few days after finding the chicks had hatched, we found the nest torn apart and no babies around. Artie and I were heartbroken. We told Amelia that maybe they had flown away with their mother. We’re not quite ready to explain life and death in such a stark reality.
