Loons on Beech Hill Pond – 6.22.2012

After a beautiful, warm summer day, we headed out to camp to swim after Artie got home from work. Unfortunately, the thunder storms started building as we got into the car, and by the time we got to the beach, it was overcast, cool and breezy with very distant storms rumbling by. Not exactly perfect swimming conditions. Amelia and Katie both went swimming, but Artie and I chose not to go much further than our knees. While there, we saw three loons converge and then what appeared to be a fight between them. I’m assuming that two of them were males, fighting over the female who was soon left behind, alone. At first they just splashed and lunged at each other in the water. But, then one started chasing the other back and forth in front of us. This went on for minutes and then they started moving further out, away from the shore. After 20 minutes or so, we could just see faint splashes in the water as they continued their chase. Soon after, they disappeared from sight.
